The U.S. Embassy Austria in Vienna is recruiting for a Commercial Specialist

The Commercial Specialist is a core member of the U.S. Embassy’s U.S. Commercial Service team that is responsible for developing strategies and implementing programs to advance U.S. business interests in Austria.  The incumbent advises the Commercial Counselor and provides complex business counseling to U.S. companies for specific industries as determined by market demand (e.g.: information technology, energy, and/or advanced manufacturing).  He/she leads on activities to assist U.S. firms to meet their business growth goals including market research and reporting, trade promotion events, and strategic private and government engagement.  The incumbent develops expert knowledge, maintains relevant high-level contacts in government and private sector, and creates medium-to long-term strategies for advancing U.S. business.  He/she monitors potential market barriers for U.S. business and recommends strategies to address these.  He/she identifies private business and government procurement opportunities and develops strategies to assist U.S. companies in pursing these.  The incumbent actively promotes Austrian company investment in the United States.  He/she assists with high level U.S. government visits and periodically assumes project leader responsibilities for major activities. Occasional travel is required.


Qualifications and competencies required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, marketing, international trade or business administration,
  • At least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in economics, market research, marketing, trade promotion, sales, or other closely related fields, with international business knowledge and experience.
  • Detailed understanding of Austrian government, political system, economy, laws and regulations, and business culture.  Deep knowledge of key business aspects of at least one leading Austrian industry.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as advanced business writing and analysis capabilities.
  • Fluency in English and German
